Most content about buying ERP software is written by companies selling one, which is not the most useful source when you are trying to make an unbiased decision. Here is a practical, vendor-neutral way to approach it.
Start with your actual pain, not a feature list
Before looking at any specific platform, write down the two or three things costing you the most time or causing the most errors right now: manual data entry between systems, inventory counts that never match reality, financial reports that take days to compile. Any ERP evaluation should be judged against whether it solves those specific problems, not against a generic feature checklist every vendor will claim to tick.
Off-the-shelf platforms worth knowing
Tally is the default for many smaller Indian businesses handling core accounting, though it is not a full ERP on its own. Zoho One and Zoho Books cover a broader range at a price point accessible to growing SMEs. NetSuite and SAP Business One serve larger, more complex operations that have outgrown simpler tools, at a correspondingly higher cost and implementation effort.
When custom makes more sense than off-the-shelf
If your business runs a genuinely unusual process (a specific manufacturing workflow, a distribution model that does not map cleanly to standard retail or wholesale patterns), forcing that process into an off-the-shelf platform's assumptions often costs more in workarounds and lost efficiency than building something tailored from the start. The break-even point depends on your scale, but as a rough guide, if you are paying for heavy customisation of an off-the-shelf platform anyway, it is worth pricing out a custom build for comparison.
Implementation is where most ERP projects actually fail
The software itself is rarely the reason an ERP rollout fails. Poor data migration from old systems, inadequate staff training, and rushing to go live before the system is properly tested against real business scenarios are the actual, common causes. Budget real time and attention for implementation, not just for the software licence.
If you are trying to work out whether an off-the-shelf platform or a custom build fits your business better, our software team can walk through your actual processes before recommending either.
